Asian Eyelid Surgery also known as Asian Blepharoplasty or Double Eyelid Surgery is a specialized procedure for changing the appearance of the upper eyelids in Asian patients. The goal of Double Eyelid Surgery is to add a fold to the upper eyelid to create a larger, rounder and more open appearance.

About 50 percent of all Asians and people of Asian descent are born without a fold in the upper eyelid.  Commonly referred to as "single" eyelids, eyelids without this crease or fold tend to have a tendency towards thicker skin with larger amounts of fatty tissue or "fat pads" than eyelids that have upper eyelid folds.

Patients who are not Asian may elect Double Eyelid Surgery because the drooping eyelids obscure their vision (ptosis). In medically necessary cases such as these, some or all of the procedure may be covered by insurance.

Asian Eyelid Surgery, adds a fold to the upper eyelid to give the eyes a larger, rounder appearance. Double Eyelid Surgery can be performed in different ways depending on a patient’s needs. In many cases a single, well-placed suture may be all that is required, while other patients may require a combination of liposuction and tissue excision. Double eyelid surgery takes approximately one hour to perform.

Asian Eyelid Surgery or Asian Double Eyelid Surgery is more specific than traditional Blepharoplasty, and presents a specific challenge to the plastic surgeon. While the goal of Asian Blepharoplasty is to create a crease in the upper eyelids and open the eyes, another part of this goal is to retain the patient's aesthetic, and individual ethnic characteristics. The eye area, the nose and the size and shape of a patient'seyes and eyelids vary greatly between Asian and Caucasian patients. A highly trained, specialized and experienced plastic surgeon will understand and be intimately familiar with the aesthetic differences between the two.

Recovery time varies depending on the type of blepharoplasty performed. In Asian Eyelid Surgery where a suture is used, the sutures are usually removed after about a week with bruising and swelling subsiding after about a month. As healing continues, the new crease in the upper eyelids will settle into position, creating the final, desired aesthetic result. The cost of an Asian Blepharoplasty procedure may be between $2500 to $5000, but difference in a provider's fees, facility and lab fees, additional expenses and the region where the procedure is performed can vary this estimate.

As always, you should consult with a qualified plastic surgeon in your area to see if Double Eyelid or Asian Blepharoplasty is right for you.
