Liposuction

What to expect after surgery (Post-Op)

After liposuction, your doctor may apply elastic bandages or compression garments to the treated areas to reduce swelling and promote your body to heal to its new contoured shape. Small surgical drains may be placed to help get rid of excess fluids. It is important to follow your doctor’s post-operative instructions. This helps to ensure proper healing, to reduce possibility of infection, and to achieve the best aesthetic results.

Recovery

Recovery time after a Liposuction varies from patient to patient and can last from a few days to several months depending on the extent of the procedure and size of the treated area. Patients usually walk and move easily following a liposuction and progressively resume normal activities or return to work one to two weeks following a liposuction procedure.

The initial healing process may involve some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the liposuctioned area. Patients report feeling soreness in that area, as if they had just undergone a vigorous workout. During the first days following a liposuction procedure, drainage of leftover, blood-tinged anesthetic solution is to be expected. You should not take aspirin or certain anti-inflammatory medications. Any pain or discomfort follwoing a liposuction is usually minor and can be relieved with pain medication or by light movement and walking.  Bruising typically disappears within 7 to 10 days.

Any stitches are removed after about two weeks. Patients should monitor the incision sites during healing and should shower in lieu of taking baths until the sites are healed following liposuction. Swelling will continue to subside more slowly, and over the next several months, the skin should tighten over the treated area. How much the skin tightens depends on the elasticity, age and general health of your skin. To help reduce post-liposuction swelling, bruising, and scarring, your doctor will most likely ask that you wear a compression garment for several weeks following your liposuction procedure.
