Liposuction

Side and Effects

Swelling, tenderness and bruising are the most common side effects of liposuction. While swelling in the treated area is common, some patients may also see a lumpy appearance in the treated area that normally settles over time. In some cases where large amounts of fat are removed (more than 5 liters), secondary procedures may be necessary.

Liposuction is a relatively safe procedure. Ongoing advances in liposuction have helped minimize the risks and complications associated with the procedure. Complications associated with any type of cosmetic surgery are rare, but can include, but are not limited to: infection, an adverse reaction to medication or anesthesia, blood clotting and/or extended healing time.

Complications

Complications specifically related to liposuction can include dents, lumps or sagging of the skin caused by an excessive removal of fat during liposuction, friction burns, fluid accumulation, and excessive fluid loss. In rare cases patients undergoing liposuction may experience damage to the skin or nerves around the treated area or other more severe complications. Always discuss the risks, side effects and complications of liposuction or any cosmetic procedure with your doctor or plastic surgeon.
