Male Breast Reduction
What happens after you meet your surgeon?
After you've discussed the male breast reduction procedure with the doctor and your questions have been answered, you will most likely speak with the patient care or surgical coordinator to decide on a day and time for your surgery and receive a quote. Many practices will perform the surgery within a nearby hospital, accredited office-based surgery center within their office, or an ambulatory surgery center outside of the office.
Once you book your procedure you may be asked to get certain lab work performed or receive a medical evaluation from your internist or surgeon. You'll be asked to stop smoking prior to surgery, and to discontinue the use of aspirin, herbal supplements, and other drugs that may increase bleeding.
You should also leave your doctor’s office with a solid understanding of male breast reduction, and detailed instructions on what to do the night before and morning of surgery, post-operative care instructions, and consents to sign and return regarding anesthesia and your male breast reduction surgery. Before your surgery you will want to arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery and to stay with you following surgery, for at least the first night. A post-op care facility focused on plastic and cosmetic surgery patients may be an option.
Male Breast Reduction surgery, liposuction or a combination of the two may be used to treat gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts) and reconstruct the contour of the chest. Male Breast Reduction takes an average of two hours to perform and is usually performed on an outpatient basis, using general or local anesthesia with sedation. Sometimes an overnight hospital stay is recommended for more extensive Male Breast Reduction surgeries. In some cases, reduction may only require liposuction, but in more extensive Male Breast reduction surgeries, excessive glandular tissue, fat and skin is removed using one or more techniques and differing types of incisions based on the extent of the Male Breast Reduction.
