Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
What to expect after surgery (Post-Op)
Like other breast saurgeries, a Breast Lift requires time to fully recover. Patients with realistic expectations who are well-informed about the procedure and who follow their doctor's post-op instructions are often more satisfied with the results of their Breast Lift.
Recovery
You should expect to be able to return to work, depending on the physical demands of your job and light activities about a week after your Breast Lift. During the first week, it is important to avoid bending over or performing any strenuous activities that put unnecessary pressure on the chest as this can cause injury or excess swelling and bleeding. Breast lift surgery patients should not lift anything over their head for three to four weeks following surgery, and should avoid heavy lifting at least four to six weeks. After several weeks you will likely be able to resume most normal activities, such as mild exercise. You may still experience mild discomfort, but that is normal.
You should be careful not to put too much pressure initially on your breasts, and your doctor will recommend that you sleep on your back for at least the first two weeks. You may be urged to get out of bed for short periods the day after surgery. Short walks are typically recommended but you must be careful not to strain yourself.
You'll be required to wear a special bra or compression garment to reduce swelling and promote correct healing to your new breast contours. You should expect to wear this special bra or compression garment at all times for the first several weeks and you shouldn't wear an underwire bra of any kind for at least the first month until you no longer need to wear any special garments. Any external sutures may be removed in stages after 2-3 weeks following the Breast Lift.
It is important to follow your doctor’s post-operative instructions. This helps to reduce the risk of complications and possibility of infection, ensure proper healing, and achieve the best aesthetic results.
