Facelift

Side Effects and Risks

Despite being among the safest of cosmetic procedures, facelifts, like any other surgical operation carry the risk of complications. In addition to the expected swelling, bruising, light post-op bleeding and other side effects associated with facelift surgery, complications from facelift surgery can include: hematoma (bleeding under the skin requiring operation to stop), uncontrolled or excessive bleeding, infection and reactions to anesthesia.

Complications

Less frequent complications can include: temporary injury to facial motor or sensory nerves, unwanted scarring, temporary crusting of the incision areas, hair loss, skin loss, slow healing, skin discoloration and temporary numbness or tingling. Smokers in particular run a higher risk of complications from skin loss and slow wound healing. Chronic pain or permanent complications due to a facelift are very rare. Additional cosmetic surgery to improve results or surgery to address complications is considered to be a very infrequent necessity.
