Necklift

What to expect after surgery (Post-Op)

After your necklift, your doctor may apply compression garments to the lower face and neck area, which will keep swelling down and promote correct healing after surgery. Your plastic surgeon will most likely prescribe pain medication and antibiotics to take following a necklift, but you should avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications. Compared to other procedures, the necklift (platyplasty) is a relatively painless surgery and offers a faster recovery time, usually around 10-14 days.

Recovery

While the recovery time from a necklift is more rapid than some other procedures, recovery still takes time. It is common for patients to return to work in about 2 weeks after a necklift. Patients can typically resume more vigorous activities such as sports within 3-5 weeks. You'll be instructed to stay in bed and rest for the first 24-48 hours and to avoid as much activity as possible for the first few days.

During this time, you'll be asked to increase the frequency and period of time you get up and walk in order to help ensure a proper recovery from a necklift. You should keep your head and neck still and avoid turning your head from side to side following a necklift. For the first few weeks, your doctor will request that you sleep with your head elevated and avoid strenuous activity and actions such as lifting objects above a certain weight and bending over.

While your dressings may be changed regularly, any sutures you have from a necklift won't be removed until at least a week following a necklift. During the first week and possibly longer, your plastic surgeon will advise you to avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen and/or certain medications. Smoking has a significant impact on wound healing, so it is recommended that patients quit or otherwise remain smoke-free following a necklift.

It is important to follow your doctor’s post-operative instructions and to follow-up with scheduled post-op visits to your plastic surgeon. This helps to ensure proper healing, to reduce possibility of infection, and to achieve the best aesthetic results.
